MI managed to retain their Big 4.
Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners Mumbai Indians (MI) managed to retain all their top players ahead of the IPL 2025 retention deadline earlier today.
Alongside skipper Hardik Pandya, MI also retained former franchise skipper Rohit Sharma, talismanic pacer Jasprit Bumrah along with India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav and young talent Tilak Varma.
Speaking after the retentions, skipper Hardik Pandya, who has been confirmed as the leader of the side for the upcoming season, expressed the brotherhood shared amongst the players.
Pandya said, “Five people who we all have cherished a lot of good memories together. We are as one. We are five fingers but one fist. That’s how I look at it. We are going to come in all guns blazing, with brotherhood, friendship and at the same point of time we are going to back each other no matter what happens”.
Notably, MI’s retentions were possible due to a commendable act by Rohit Sharma.
In an unexpected and generous gesture, Rohit volunteered to be retained as the fourth player on MI’s retention list for IPL 2025, despite being the franchise’s most successful captain and top player over the years.
With a value of INR 16.3 crore, Rohit’s choice enabled Bumrah (INR 18 crore), Suryakumar (INR 16.35 crore), and Hardik (INR 16.35 crore) to secure higher retention slots, highlighting the team’s emerging leaders.
Going into the IPL 2025 auction, MI have already spent INR 75 crores and will have INR 45 crores in their purse along with one RTM option to use on any player that they deem fit to bring into the squad.
