Glenn Maxwell ‘thanks’ India star for reviving his IPL career

Maxwell had a difficult time in the last few seasons with Punjab Kings.

While Aussie all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is one of the biggest matchwinners of his generation, there have also been phases when the dynamic right-hander has been unable to deliver the goods.

Such was the case of Maxwell in his last few seasons at the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) before joining the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2021.

Interestingly, Maxwell, in his new book titled ‘The Showman’, revealed that the credit goes to India star and former RCB skipper Virat Kohli, who was the brainchild behind the move.

In an excerpt from his book, Maxwell reflected on his challenging 2020 season, during which he managed only 108 runs and didn’t hit a single six. Following that season, during Australia’s tour, Virat Kohli extended an invitation for him to join the Bengaluru-based franchise.

Maxwell wrote, “But I still felt there had to be a twist in this story, and there was. Who to thank? Virat Kohli. On that same tour of Australia, he wanted to whisper an idea to me: him, me and AB de Villiers to be the middle order at Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021. I was in love with this before he finished his sentence. Having started with Sachin and Ricky, the chance to bat with the equivalent of them in my own generation, in those gold pads no less, was irresistible.”

Virat Kohli’s invitation to Glenn Maxwell to join RCB revived the Aussie’s IPL career

In the IPL 2021 auction, RCB acquired Glenn Maxwell for INR 14.25 crore, making him one of the highest-priced players that year, just behind Kyle Jamieson, who went for INR 15 crore. Maxwell contributed significantly that season by scoring 513 runs and taking three wickets, although RCB’s journey ended in the Eliminator round.

Following that season, Maxwell was retained alongside Virat Kohli and Mohammed Siraj for three more years at ₹11 crore. Over these subsequent three seasons, he amassed 753 runs and claimed 15 wickets while representing the Bengaluru franchise.
