He has served as a batting coach for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20 and as a consultant for Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League.
Delhi Capitals’ search for their next head coach is on, with a former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player emerging as a strong candidate to hold the position, starting next season. He was part of CSK’s maiden title-winning campaign in 2010, even though he didn’t play any games.
According to a PTI journalist, Hemang Badani, a veteran with vast coaching experience, is emerging as a possible choice to be at the coaching helm of Delhi Capitals (DC). Badani has previously served as a fielding coach and scout of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) between IPL 2021 and IPL 2023.
Further, he has served as a batting coach for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20 and as a consultant for Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League. Badani has also served as the head coach for Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
The head coach position has been vacant since Ricky Ponting parted ways with the franchise following a disappointing last cycle. DC failed to qualify for playoffs in any of the three seasons under Ponting between IPL 2022 and IPL 2024, finishing fifth, ninth, and sixth in three seasons, respectively.
Meanwhile, former India pacer, Munaf Patel, is emerging as a leading candidate for bowling coach of Delhi Capitals. During Ricky Ponting’s tenure, James Hopes, former Australian pacer, held this position, but it might be vacant now that Ponting is no longer part of the franchise.
Munaf has played 86 matches for India across three formats in his international career. He took 35 wickets at 38.54 runs apiece in 13 Tests, 86 wickets at a 30.26 average in 70 ODIs, and 4 wickets in three T20Is, with his last international outing coming in 2011.
He has also played in 63 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for three different sides – Gujarat Lions, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals – snaring 73 wickets at 22.94 runs apiece. Like Badani, he brings a wealth of experience with him.
Delhi Capitals will go through a major revamp in the coaching contingent, with Sourav Ganguly likely to continue as Director of Cricket. The first task of the new staff will be to pin down retentions and releases and form a solid team for the upcoming cycle.
