Jonny Bairstow Likely to Attract Interest from 4 Teams in IPL 2025 Auction

Jonny Bairstow could find significant interest from franchises in the IPL 2025 Auction owing to his dual skill set as a versatile batter and wicket-keeper.

English wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow was released by Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction as part of a complete overhaul influenced by their disappointing performances in the last three seasons.

Bairstow’s IPL journey began in 2019 with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he made an immediate impact by scoring 445 runs, including a century, in his debut season. Over the years, he has been known for his aggressive batting at the top order and reliable wicketkeeping skills. But his form took a hit ever since he joined Punjab Kings in 2022.

The 35-year-old amassed 253 runs at an average of 23 in the IPL 2022 season and then went on to score 298 runs at 29.80 runs per innings in IPL 2024. Although not bad, these numbers were a far cry from his stats during his stint with SRH

His release by Punjab Kings has now opened the door for other franchises to bid for his services in the upcoming auction. Let’s take a look at four teams that may be interested to acquire his services in the IPL 2025 Auction.

Mumbai Indians (MI)

With the release of their previous wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, MI are in search of a player who can provide explosive starts and also don the gloves. Bairstow’s aggressive batting style aligns with MI’s approach, and his experience in international cricket adds depth to their lineup.

His ability to handle pressure situations and adapt to different batting positions makes him a valuable asset for MI, who aim to reclaim their dominance in the league.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have often relied heavily on their top-order batters, and the inclusion of Bairstow could provide the stability and firepower they seek with the release of Faf du Plessis. Moreover, with the retirement of their previous wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, RCB are in need of a player who can open the innings aggressively and also contribute behind the stumps.

Bairstow’s proficiency against both pace and spin makes him a suitable candidate for RCB’s batting lineup. His experience in international cricket and familiarity with Indian conditions further enhance his appeal to the franchise.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been on the lookout for a consistent opener who can provide explosive starts and also keep wickets. They released both Phil Salt and Rahmanullah Gurbaz ahead of the auctions, and now Bairstow’s aggressive batting at the top order fits well with KKR’s strategy of building momentum in the powerplay overs.

His ability to play spin effectively is an added advantage, considering KKR’s home ground conditions. Moreover, Bairstow’s experience and leadership qualities could provide the stability KKR needs in their batting lineup.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Bairstow’s former team, might look to re-acquire him to strengthen their top order and add a reliable backup for their primary wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen.

During his stint with SRH, Bairstow formed a formidable opening partnership and delivered consistent performances. His familiarity with the team’s environment and previous success could prompt SRH to bid for him in the auction. Bairstow’s aggressive batting and wicketkeeping skills align with SRH’s requirements, making him a potential target for the franchise.
