Previously, reports surfaced suggesting that Shreyas Iyer might not be the top KKR retention.
In a recent development coming in, there have been new talks between reigning Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and star batter Shreyas Iyer regarding his future ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 retention deadline on October 31.
Earlier, reports had surfaced suggesting that Shreyas Iyer might not be the top retention for KKR and he could put his name into the auction pool. While his retention might not exactly be straightforward, the Shahrukh Khan co-owned franchise have held the first round of conversation with the star batter.
A source privy to the developments revealed to TOI, “As of last Friday, the two parties hadn’t spoken. There was lot of word going around on Shreyas Iyer and KKR but the two never sat across the table to have any discussion with regards to the plans for future or the IPL retentions. The first conversation happened on Sunday.”
The three-time IPL champions are reportedly prioritizing West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell as their main retention target while also planning to retain Shreyas Iyer, though his role as captain for the upcoming season is still uncertain. Previously, KKR retained the 36-year-old Russell for INR 12 crore, and he is expected to receive a significant pay increase.
As the IPL 2024 winners, the team faces a challenging task of selecting a limited number of players from their championship-winning squad before the retention deadline.
KKR has several attractive retention options, including Rinku Singh, uncapped player Harshit Rana, Mitchell Starc, Sunil Narine, and Varun Chakravarthy. However, it remains to be seen how much the current champions are willing to invest.
