KL Rahul drops bombshell, rejects LSG retention offer: Reports

The development happened in a recent meeting between the player and the LSG management.

In a massive development coming in ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) retention deadline, star India batter KL Rahul has reportedly denied a retention offer from the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) management.

According to an ESPNCricinfo report, it is understood that during a meeting with LSG’s owners recently, Rahul had not committed to accepting any offer if made and is set to enter the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction.

There has already been a lot of speculation surrounding Rahul’s future at the franchise ever since a public fallout between the player and team owner Sanjiv Goenka during last season. Added to that, LSG finished seventh in IPL 2024 under Rahul’s captaincy after making the playoffs in their first two seasons.

KL Rahul’s strike-rate has been a major issue

KL Rahul was roped in by LSG in their debut season in the drafts ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction for a staggering amount of INR 17 crore.

Rahul has been one of the prolific run-scorers for LSG, topping the charts across three seasons. He finished as the second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2022 with 616 runs but missed the second half of the 2023 season with an injury. However, he was once again LSG’s top-scorer in 2024 with 520 runs. Despite the volume of Rahul’s runs, his strike rate has been the centre of discussion which was mostly on the lower side.

During the IPL 2023 season, Rahul featured in 9 matches and scored 274 runs at an average of 34.25 but a subpar strike rate of 113.22

He improved slightly with a strike rate was 136.12 in IPL 2024 but often came under scrutiny, especially as the league has seen much higher scoring rates in the last two seasons.
