KL Rahul Unlikely to Lead Any Team that Acquires Him in IPL 2025 Auction

KL Rahul wants to prioritize personal freedom and form over the burdens of captaincy heading into the IPL 2025 Season.

As the IPL 2025 auction approaches, KL Rahul’s name is once again making headlines. The former captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has become a focal point of speculation.

Rahul, who was released by LSG ahead of this year’s mega auction, has openly shared his aspirations for a fresh start. These revelations, coupled with his tumultuous stint as captain, hint that he may not prefer leading any team that secures his services.

In a promotional video posted by Star Sports, Rahul candidly spoke about his priorities heading into the new season. “I wanted to start fresh, I wanted to explore my options and I wanted to go and play where I could find some freedom, where the team atmosphere could be something lighter. Sometimes you need to move away and find something good for yourself,” he remarked.

His tone was reflective, emphasizing his desire to move past the burdens of leadership and focus on rediscovering his love for the game.

He further added, “I have been out of the T20 team for a while and I know where I stand as a player and I know what I need to do to get back, so I’ll look forward to this IPL season to give me that platform where I can go back and enjoy my cricket. My aim is to obviously get back into the Indian T20 team.”

These comments strongly suggest that Rahul is not keen on returning to a leadership role, instead choosing to focus on personal form and team contributions. His desire for a lighter dressing room atmosphere signals a shift in mindset after years of shouldering the dual burden of being a premier batter and a captain.

KL Rahul’s Tumultuous IPL 2024 Season with LSG

Rahul’s recent comments gain further context when viewed against the backdrop of his last season with LSG. The team endured a challenging IPL 2024 campaign, failing to meet expectations despite Rahul’s consistent performances as a batter.

However, it wasn’t his on-field contributions that grabbed headlines but a highly publicized altercation with franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka.

Following a humiliating 10-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, cameras captured a visibly frustrated Goenka engaging in an animated discussion with Rahul. The footage sparked a media storm, with fans and analysts criticizing the public nature of the exchange.

Many felt that the incident epitomized the pressure Rahul was under as captain and highlighted the demanding environment within the LSG camp. Such episodes may have reinforced Rahul’s desire to step back from the captaincy, opting instead to prioritize his individual performance.

Rahul’s Leadership History: A Mixed Bag

Rahul first took on the captaincy for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2020, where he led the side for two seasons. While his personal performances as a batter were exemplary—he won the Orange Cap in 2020—Punjab’s inconsistency as a team often overshadowed his contributions.

After moving to LSG in 2022, Rahul guided the newly-formed franchise to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023, cementing his credentials as a leader.

Despite these achievements, Rahul’s captaincy style often drew criticism for being conservative, particularly in high-pressure scenarios. His reluctance to take risks and experiment with strategies left many questioning his ability to inspire a team to the title.

These perceptions, coupled with the mounting pressure from both fans and franchise management, appear to have played a role in his decision to avoid leadership roles moving forward.

With a career strike rate of 136.22 in the IPL and the ability to score runs consistently, he remains a valuable asset. Franchises seeking an experienced batter to stabilize their lineup will undoubtedly target him during the auction.

However, teams will also need to align their expectations with Rahul’s clear preference for a more relaxed and supportive team environment.

Potential Franchises that could Target KL Rahul in the IPL 2025 Auction

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB): A return to his former team could be on the cards. With reports suggesting Virat Kohli’s reinstatement as captain, RCB may look to Rahul to strengthen their top order and add a calming presence to the dressing room. Rahul will also provide value as a wicket-keeper now that Dinesh Karthik has retired.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK): Known for valuing experienced players, CSK could benefit from Rahul’s batting and wicket-keeping abilities, especially with MS Dhoni nearing the end of his IPL career.

Punjab Kings (PBKS): A return to PBKS could provide a sense of familiarity, allowing Rahul to focus solely on his batting without the added pressure of captaincy.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR): The Kolkata-based franchise is in need of a captain and a wicketkeeper-batter. Rahul might not want to lead but KKR would still benefit from the presence of an experienced batter like Rahul at the top of the order. Moreover, he is well capable of handling wicket-keeping duties as well.

The Road Back to India’s T20I Team

Rahul’s ultimate goal remains clear: a return to the Indian T20I side. Having been out of the squad for a while, he sees IPL 2025 as a platform to showcase his form and earn a recall.

By stepping away from leadership duties, Rahul hopes to rejuvenate his game and contribute to his team’s success, both in the IPL and on the international stage.

His decision to prioritize personal freedom and form over the burdens of captaincy may redefine his career trajectory. As the IPL 2025 auction nears, Rahul’s comments are a reminder that sometimes stepping back can be the best way to move forward.

Whether he joins a new franchise or reunites with an old one, Rahul’s focus on enjoying his cricket and reclaiming his place in India’s T20 side could set the stage for a compelling comeback.
