Meet Robin Minz: Jharkhand’s Chris Gayle Set to Open With Rohit Sharma For Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025

Robin Minz is an explosive wicketkeeper-batter who can take on the bowlers at will and he is likely to debut for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025.

Robin Minz, a 22-year-old cricketer from Jharkhand, is set to play for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 season after the franchise acquired him for INR 65 Lakhs in the mega auction in Jeddah. Known for his aggressive batting style, Minz has earned the nickname “Jharkhand’s Chris Gayle.”

Minz’s cricket journey began at a young age. His father, Francis Xavier Minz, a former army personnel now working as a security guard at Ranchi airport, noticed Robin’s interest in cricket when he was just two years old. Francis crafted a bat from a piece of wood, encouraging his son’s budding passion. The family later moved to Namkum, near Ranchi, where Robin’s cricketing pursuits intensified during his school years.

The youngster’s talent became evident in domestic cricket, particularly in the T20 format. He represented Jharkhand in various tournaments, showing his prowess as a left-handed batsman and wicketkeeper. His performances caught the attention of IPL scouts, leading to significant opportunities.

Robin Minz Suffered a Setback last season

In the IPL 2024 auction, Minz was acquired by the Gujarat Titans for ₹3.6 crore, marking a historic moment as he became the first Adivasi player to join the IPL. However, a bike accident before the season ruled him out of participation.

Undeterred, Minz made a strong comeback in domestic cricket. He made his first-class and T20 debut for Jharkhand recently. Batting at No.6 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Minz smashed an unbeaten 36 off only 13 deliveries against Manipur. This led to his acquisition by the Mumbai Indians for ₹65 lakh in the IPL 2025 auction.

Minz’s aggressive batting and ability to clear boundaries have drawn comparisons to West Indies’ Chris Gayle. His left-handed stance and powerful hitting make him a formidable presence at the crease. Additionally, his skills as a wicketkeeper add versatility to his role in the team.

Where will Robin Minz bat for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025?

Joining the five-time IPL champions, Minz is expected to bolster Mumbai Indians’ batting lineup as a wicketkeeper-batter after Ishan Kishan’s departure. His inclusion adds depth to the squad, providing options in both batting and wicketkeeping departments.

It remains to be seen where Minz will end up batting. Will it be a straight swap in Ishan Kishan’s place to partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the order? Or will he be tasked with finishing the innings at No.6 or 7? Opening will be more suitable for him at this stage of his career as it will give him freedom to express himself with the field restrictions in play. Moreover, it will help MI in creating a RHB-LHB opening combination, which won’t be possible if they open with Will Jacks and Rohit.

As the IPL 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Robin Minz as he prepares to make his debut. His journey serves as an inspiration, showing how talent and perseverance can lead to remarkable success. Fans are hopeful that “Jharkhand’s Chris Gayle” will make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
