Final Judgement! MS Dhoni and CSK fix meeting before retention deadline to decide future

CSK will take their final call on retention only after meeting Dhoni.

In a recent development coming in, MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) officials have reportedly planned for a meeting to finalise the future of their former skipper ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) retention deadline.

CSK will take their final call on retention only after meeting Dhoni. According to Sports Tak, a source privy to the developments revealed that the CSK management had approached Dhoni. However, the former India and CSK captain said he is not available till the 28th of October. It is thus expected that both parties will meet either on the 29th or 30th of this month and then will finalise retentions. The deadline for all teams to submit their list of retained players is October 31.

Dhoni is currently in the twilight of his career and with a persisting knee problem, it will be interesting to see what roadmap the franchise decides for the great ‘Thala’.

MS Dhoni can be retained as an uncapped player by CSK

This year, Dhoni is eligible to be retained by CSK as an uncapped player, courtesy to the reinstatement of a rule that was eliminated in 2021. Under this rule, a player is considered uncapped if they have retired from international cricket for at least five years.

Dhoni’s last international match was in the 2019 ODI World Cup semifinal, and he announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020. As one of the most successful captains in IPL history, Dhoni led CSK to five IPL titles, a record they share with the most successful teams in the league.

Dhoni stepped down as captain, with Ruturaj Gaikwad being named his successor ahead of CSK’s opening match of IPL 2024 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
