Mumbai Indians confirm captain for IPL 2025

The news has come right after Mumbai Indians announced their retained players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

Mumbai Indians (MI) have announced their captain for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The news has come right after Mumbai Indians announced their retained players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene has confirmed Hardik Pandya will continue leading the side next season. He didn’t have a great season last year as a captain, for MI could only win four matches and ended at the bottom of the points table.

There were reports about rifts and grouping inside the dressing room, and the crowd pressure everywhere MI played only exacerbated things for Pandya. However, the team has shown faith in him, especially due to his credentials as a captain.

Hardik won a trophy with Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2022 edition and took them to the final in the following season, coming short against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He has also led India in the shortest format, and there are no doubts about his qualities as a leader.

Mumbai Indians retain Jasprit Bumrah as their top retention

Talking about Mumbai Indians’ retentions, Jasprit Bumrah will be their first retention and get INR 18 crores from the next edition. Then, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya will get INR 16.35 crores each, while Rohit Sharma will be the fourth retention and get INR 16.30 crores.

Meanwhile, Tilak Varma will be the fifth retention and get INR 8 crores. MI have ensured retaining their core and will have a solid unit to form a complete squad around them.

There were a few reports around Rohit Sharma, suggesting he will leave the franchise and join some other team ahead of the next season. He was supposed to come into the auction, which would have helped him fetch a massive amount, but MI ensured to convince him to stay.

That Hardik is retained as captain shows the environment inside the room is improving and the team is coming through as a unit. The next task will be to find the ideal players ahead of the next season and form a complete side to compete hard for the title.
