Mumbai Indians last in the points table in IPL 2024
Reports suggest that skipper Rohit Sharma, who led India to win the T20 World Cup, but was replaced as Mumbai Indians captain by Hardik Pandya last season, is likely to be one of four players to be retained by the franchise. In the report that emerged on The Indian Express, Rohit will be retained alongside three other star players, while MI might use RTM on Tim David and possibly Ishan Kishan.
The other three Indian players which Mumbai Indians are most likely to retain are Hardik Pandya, who is the current captain of MI, Jasprit Bumrah, without whom MI bowling is incomplete, and Suryakumar Yadav, the current Indian skipper.
Hardik faced boos in almost every game at the Wankhede Stadium, the home ground of Mumbai Indians, as fans were not happy with the change of captaincy during the last season. The team had a disastrous campaign and ended the season at the bottom of the IPL 2024 table, winning 4 four out of 14 matches. But after his heroics in the T20 World Cup, he has regained the trust of the fans.

Undoubtedly, Mumbai Indians boast the best Indian players in their team despite a poor last season where they ended last in the points table. Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Nehal Wadhera represent the top six for them which is among the best top six when it comes to Indian players, all of whom are well-capable of being retained. For their bowling, they surely will want to hold on to Jasprit Bumrah.
Reports indicate that MI will most likely retain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah. However, the exact figures for their contracts are not revealed yet.
The advantage that Mumbai have in their squad is that it doesn’t have many overseas high-profile players so most of their retention will rely on retaining Indian cricketers. If they lose any of the ones listed above, other teams will grab them in a second.
Mumbai Indians, if needed, will be able to retain Nehal Wadhera using the uncapped player retention rule at ₹4 crores. Managing Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma will be an issue, but MI can use the Right to Match (RTM) card during the auction to bring one of them back if required.
According to the rules, these six retained players for each team can be capped and uncapped, though not more than five capped players and only one uncapped player is allowed. The ₹ 75 crores total is allocated to them and according to their choice they will have to finalize their list of retained players before October 31 before the mega auction.
