According to reports, KKR will release their premium all-rounder and one of their biggest match-winners Russell ahead of the IPL 2025 retention deadline.
An old post from Venky Mysore, the CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has gone viral after the news about Andre Russell came to light. According to reports, KKR will release their premium all-rounder and one of their biggest match-winners Russell ahead of the IPL 2025 retention deadline.
In the viral post, Venky assured Russell that he would remain with the Knight Riders till he decided to retire from IPL. The post is from 2020 when Russell expressed his wish to play for KKR till his retirement.
“@Russell12A no doubt you will remain a Knight Rider until you retire from the game & beyond! #Superman” posted Mysore on May 3, 2020.
Venky’s post has been viral on X (formerly Twitter), with KKR fans reminding him to remember his words and retain their premium all-rounder at any cost, given what he has done for the franchise. However, other team fans and users mocked Venky for making false promises, with a few also underlining the ruthless nature of IPL auctions, especially ahead of a mega one, for they are bound to be harsh on teams with several quality players.
Andre Russell joined the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2014 auction at INR 60 Lakhs and has been with them since then. He has gradually converted himself into a runaway match-winner and one of the best performers for KKR.
Russell has been KKR’s third-leading run-scorer, with 2426 runs at an average of 29.95 and a strike rate of 175.79, including 11 fifties, in 101 innings. Further, he has also been their second-leading wicket-taker, with 114 wickets at an average of 21.20, including two four-wicket and a five-wicket haul, in 105 innings.

There’s a certain aura around Andre Russell, who has won numerous matches to the Knight Riders alone. His recent rise as a bowler was vital in making KKR the winner in the 2024 edition.
Maybe his age (36) might be a reason, but Russell has shown no signs of regression. It remains to be seen whether the reports hold any truth, but if they are correct, the decision will go down as one of the biggest in the league’s history.
