‘Age is just a number:’ RCB Legend Wants Faf du Plessis to Continue as Captain in IPL 2025

Faf is 40 and might not endure another IPL cycle of three years, so investment in him might backfire later in the cycle.

Faf du Plessis was the best batter of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the previous cycle, batting exceptionally well in all three editions. Since joining RCB, he has been their leading run-scorer, scoring 1636 runs at an average of 38.04 and a strike rate of 146.99 in 45 innings, including 15 fifties.

Further, he has also led the team successfully during his stint as RCB have qualified for playoffs twice in three attempts under his leadership. Last season, he revived RCB out of nowhere and took them to playoffs, proving his inclusion correct.

However, as RCB prepare for a fresh season, they might be tempted to part ways with their captain. Faf is 40 and might not endure another IPL cycle of three years, so investment in him might backfire later in the cycle.

He will show signs of regression sooner or later, so RCB would want alternatives in the mega auction where the player pool is larger. Getting a replacement midway through the cycle will be arduous, and RCB will have to come up with a makeshift plan at some stage.

AB de Villiers Wants Faf du Plessis to Continue as Captain in IPL 2025

While Faf is getting older, AB de Villiers, his South Africa teammate, feels age is just a number. AB stated players are used to him, and Virat will back him on his YouTube channel.

“Age is just a number, guys. I don’t see why his turning 40 would be an issue. He has been there for a few seasons, and the players are used to him. I think Virat will back him with all his experience.”

At this stage, Faf has shown no signs of slowing down and has performed exceptionally well anywhere he has played. Even in the ongoing edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Faf has been among the leading run-scorers, with 384 runs at an average of 38.40 and a strike rate of 148.84 in 11 outings.

Further, he also has four fifties in the tournament. It will be interesting to see whether RCB retain him or build a team for the future by bringing a change to the captaincy department.
