Virat Kohli jumped to sixth place from 12th in the latest ICC Test rankings for batters.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) released its latest Test rankings on October 2, with Virat Kohli making significant gains. The Indian batting stalwart climbed six spots to reach sixth in the rankings following his performances against Bangladesh in the recent bilateral series. Kohli, who returned with scores of 47 and an unbeaten 29 in the final Test, continues to solidify his position as one of the most consistent players in the format.
In addition to Kohli’s rise, India’s young sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal also made waves. The 21-year-old left-hander jumped two places to third, marking his career-high rating. Jaiswal was the standout batter in the Bangladesh series, amassing 189 runs across four innings. His consistency has not only earned him praise but has also placed him second on the list of highest run-scorers in the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, with 1,217 runs from 20 innings.
The biggest story on the bowling front is Jasprit Bumrah’s return to the top of the Test rankings. Bumrah, India’s pace spearhead, replaced fellow teammate Ravichandran Ashwin to reclaim the No. 1 spot among Test bowlers. The right-arm fast bowler was in sublime form during the India-Bangladesh series, taking 11 wickets to finish as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the series. His exceptional performance played a pivotal role in India’s 2-0 whitewash over Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja retained his spot as the No. 1 all-rounder in the world. Jadeja recently achieved the rare milestone of 3,000 runs and 300 wickets in Test cricket, becoming only the 11th player to accomplish this feat.

India’s commanding performance in the recent series has also kept them on top of the WTC 2023-25 standings. With eight wins from 11 matches and a win percentage of 74.24, Rohit Sharma’s side is firmly in the driver’s seat to reach their third consecutive WTC final. Australia and Sri Lanka follow in second and third, respectively, with win percentages of 62.50 and 55.56.
India’s next challenge in Tests comes in the form of a three-match home Test series against New Zealand, followed by a crucial five-match series in Australia starting November 22. Having finished runners-up in the last two editions of the WTC, India will be eager to break the cycle and secure their first WTC title in 2025.
