Shashank mentioned that he has been leading in the DY Patil T20 tournament for five years and has had good success, which has boosted his confidence.
Punjab Kings were initially criticized for buying uncapped Shashank Singh at the IPL 2024 auction. However, what followed took everyone by surprise.
The talented cricketer from Chhattisgarh became a standout player for the team in IPL 2024, scoring 354 runs at a strike rate of 164.65, hitting 21 sixes, and 28 fours. These impressive stats made him the team’s top scorer in IPL 2024.
Punjab Kings retained just two uncapped players. On the retention deadline, they kept Shashank Singh for INR 5.5 crore and Prabhsimran Singh for INR 4 crore, totaling INR 9.50 crore for both players.
Speaking to News18, Shashank Singh shared his thoughts on the possibility of being included in the leadership group of Punjab Kings, expressing that he wasn’t sure about his chances but was open to the idea.
Shashank mentioned that he has been leading in the DY Patil T20 tournament for five years and has had good success, which has boosted his confidence. He also pointed out that if the Chhattisgarh management feels he’s capable of leading the team, he would gladly take on the responsibility.
“Honestly, I don’t know much about it (chances of being included in the PBKS leadership group). I have been leading in the DY Patil T20 tournament for five years and touchwood, I’m doing good so far. Even for Chhattisgarh, if the management considers me capable of leading the side, I would accept it happily,” Shashank said.

Shashank emphasized that he believes in his leadership skills and his ability to win championships. He also mentioned that if Punjab Kings decides to give him a chance to captain the team, he would embrace the opportunity and make the most of it, though he remains grateful without expecting anything.
“I feel that I have the ability to lead a side and win a championship. Similarly, if Punjab Kings want to try me as captain, I will definitely grab that opportunity with both hands and make proper use of it. I will be grateful but not expecting anything,” Shashank added.
Regardless of his position, Shashank emphasized that his responsibility remains the same, to always give his best and contribute to the team’s success, whether he’s an uncapped player or a retained one.
“However, the responsibility on my shoulder doesn’t change at all. Be it an uncapped player last year or an uncapped retention now, the job is to go out and give my 110% and make the team win,” Shashank concluded.
