He has not only scored runs, but those have come at a good pace.
A former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star has had a dream start to his ODI career, for the batter has scored runs in almost every innings. He scored another fifty against England in the second ODI in Antigua.
Sherfane Rutherford notched up another half-century, scoring 54 runs in 36 balls, including four boundaries and three maximums, at a strike rate of 150. Coming to bat at No.5, the southpaw was positive from the first ball and took the innings forward at a solid rate, forming a vital 79-run stand with Shai Hope, who amassed a fabulous ton.
62.96% of his runs came via fours and sixes as his knock provided the impetus to the innings as Rutheford left the team in good health. After Keacy Carty (71) got out, West Indies required someone to continue from where he left off, and Rutherford did precisely that.
He was dominant on the off-side region, for 67% of his total runs came in this area. He eventually got out in the 40th over but not before another impressive batting show in the 50-over format.
Sherfane Rutherford hasn’t put a foot wrong in the 50-over format, for he has scored runs with ease from the first game. His latest fifty was his fourth consecutive in the format and fifth overall in seven outings.
After seven innings, he has 330 runs at an average of 66 and a strike rate of 103.77, with five fifties and the best of 80. During the Sri Lanka series away from home, Rutherford hit three successive half-centuries while remaining not out twice.
He ended the series as the leading run-scorer. He couldn’t have asked for a better start to his ODI career, and given the kind of talent he possesses, Rutherford should add many more to his tally.
He was supposed to ace the T20 format, but his best has come in ODIs. He has not only scored runs, but those have come at a good pace, showing Rutherford has cracked the ODI tempo right from the start.
