Shreyas Iyer reveals the position he might bat for KKR in IPL 2022

Appointed skipper by two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Indian batter Shreyas Iyer unveiled his spot in the batting unit for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting March 26.

An experienced middle-order batter, Iyer has said he would continue batting at his preferred slot No.3 as he had done for Delhi Capitals (DC) before parting ways with the franchise after IPL 2021.

In search of a new skipper, KKR bought Shreyas Iyer for a massive sum of INR 12.25 crores. The 27-year-old was one of the marquee players available at the mega auction in Bangalore in February.

Shreyas Iyer to retain No.3 spot for KKR

Ever since he joined the KKR set-up, there has been a sense of anticipation whether Shreyas Iyer will hold his similar spot in the batting unit after multiple years of service for the Delhi franchise at No.3. Now, the right-hander has confirmed he will retain his familiar number for his new franchise in the IPL.

“For me, personally, I feel No.3 is my position because I love to bat there and I’ve been batting at that position since very long. I’ve been very flexible; wherever the team wants me to bat at, I’m very comfortable at that and I’m ready to explore,” said Iyer in a video posted over KKR’s Youtube channel.

The Indian cricketer mentioned, however, that batting at No.3 doesn’t necessarily mean he will be playing an anchor for KKR, too. Iyer said he wants himself to lead the bandwagon and inspire a sense of flexibility within the group where players are comfortable playing different roles for the team.

“You can’t basically portray yourself as an anchor,” said the batter, who has played anchor for all of his IPL career so far. “It can differ as well. On a given day, I can be a power-hitter and there can be some other player who can play an anchor role.”

“The situations and roles can change based on conditions, and you can’t basically rely on a certain player to anchor the innings. If it’s your day, you need to go all out and see to it that you win the match for the team,” he added.

Taking cue from new India head coach Rahul Dravid’s idea to play out batting scenarios more than specific spots, Shreyas Iyer believes the KKR batting unit, too, should play the situations rather than particular numbers in the order.

Iyer parted ways with DC after IPL 2021 where he missed the tournament’s Indian leg due to a shoulder injury and was sacked from captaincy for the UAE leg played in October.

The batter was in tremendous form in the recent T20I series for India against Sri Lanka, collecting 204 runs from his three innings at a terrific strike-rate of 174.35.
