Sri Lanka under-19 pace sensation set to attract bids at the IPL 2025 auction

Known for his slingy bowling action, reminiscent of Lasith Malinga, Sewmina has grabbed attention despite having played just one T20 match so far.

The IPL 2025 auction players list has been announced, and one of the surprising names is Dumindu Sewmina, a 19-year-old fast bowler from Sri Lanka.

Known for his slingy bowling action, reminiscent of Lasith Malinga, Sewmina has grabbed attention despite having played just one T20 match so far.

In his last outing, an ODI between Sri Lanka U-19 and England U-19 in July, Dumindu Sewmina took two wickets.

The video below, however, is from a different match between Sri Lanka Under 19 and the Young Lions Invitational XI, where Dumindu Sewmina took three wickets and impressed with his precise yorkers, drawing comparisons to Malinga’s iconic deliveries.

While his experience is limited, his skill set and the example of Matheesha Pathirana, who also came to the IPL with minimal experience but has become a key player for CSK, suggest that Sewmina could follow a similar path to success.

Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru could be keen on the Sri Lanka pacer

With a base price of INR 30 lakhs, Sewmina could be a budget friendly option for teams in need of a unique fast bowler. Mumbai Indians might show interest, given their history with Sri Lankan bowlers like Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Thushara. With a limited auction budget, they could see Sewmina as an affordable addition to their pace lineup.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru could also target Sewmina. Having retained only three players, including Yash Dayal as their main pacer, RCB have struggled to find a reliable overseas fast bowler for powerplay and death overs in past seasons. Last year, Alzarri Joseph and Lockie Ferguson did not perform as expected. Sewmina, with his accurate yorkers, could be the solution RCB needs at a reasonable price.
