Eyes on Washington Sundar ahead of the IPL 2025 retention deadline with three big franchises keen on the all-rounder

Sundar's recent performances have put him on the radar of multiple teams.

Talented all-rounder Washington Sundar has seen a sudden surge in his career, credit to his emphatic display. In less than two weeks, he’s witnessed a new arc that has put him on the radar of multiple teams ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) retention deadline.

After slamming a 150 in a Ranji Trophy game, Sundar was fast-tracked into the Indian team for the second Test against New Zealand despite not being in the scheme of things in the longest format. And the 25-year-old gave a testament to his all-round prowess by picking up his maiden fifer in the match. Sundar finished the match with 11 wickets to his name – seven in the first innings and the rest four in the second innings. Subsequently, he has also been named for the upcoming high-octane Australia tour as well.

Now, with the IPL 2025 auction approaching closer, it has been learnt that three top teams have set their sights on securing the youngster.

Three big franchises keep keen to sign Washington Sundar

Sundar’s contributions were limited last season due to the ‘Impact Player’ rule. He was largely excluded by SRH and featured in only two matches but his recent exploits will make him a hot commodity at the IPL 2025 auction.

A source privy to the developments revealed to TOI,

“Sundar is keen to go into the auction pool. At the moment, at least three teams – Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings – have shown a huge interest in him. While he will not be in the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s retention list, SRH could retain Sundar in the IPL auction by using the RTM (Right to Match) card”.

It is understandable if Sundar is eager to go under the hammer since it is unlikely that SRH will retain him as the franchise has reportedly already decided on all their retentions and the all-rounder isn’t in their plans. However, they can always use the Right To Match (RTM) card to get him back.
