Three IPL teams that will want Shreyas Iyer as captain for IPL 2025

Several teams will go after Shreyas Iyer if he comes into the auction because he offers ample value as a player and captain.

There have been ample reports around Shreyas Iyer, with most suggesting his exclusion from the Kolkata Knight Riders’ retention list. The latest one all but confirms that Iyer is parting ways with the franchise, which looks like a sane move, given other options available for them.

A few reports have also reported that a couple of franchises have approached Iyer, probably asking him to join them as their captain. His credentials as a leader are strong, for he led KKR to the title and took Delhi Capitals (DC) to the final in 2020.

Several teams will go after him if he comes into the auction because he offers ample value as a player and captain. We look at three teams who might bid hard for Iyer in the IPL 2025 auction.

Punjab Kings

The perennial underperformers of IPL, Punjab Kings (PBKS) might be the first team to go after Shreyas Iyer in the auction. Shikhar Dhawan has retired, and PBKS don’t have any player in the squad capable enough to lead an IPL side.

Hence, their priority during the auction will be to find an ideal candidate for the captaincy role who can also contribute heavily with the willow. Iyer checks those boxes, for he bats in the middle order and has previous experience leading the side.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to release their current captain Faf du Plessis since he is already 40 and might not endure another cycle. While a few reports suggest Virat Kohli might return as a captain, there’s no certainty around it, which might tempt RCB to opt for a new captain.

Iyer not only ticks the captaincy box but also provides them with an additional spin-hitter in the middle order with Rajat Patidar. He fits perfectly and will enjoy playing in Bengaluru, where the tracks are flat and the boundaries are small.

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are all set to release KL Rahul ahead of the IPL 2025 retention deadline and might opt for Nicholas Pooran as their next leader. However, if the move doesn’t work, LSG can prefer Shreyas Iyer, for he provides precisely what LSG require.

The home tracks in Lucknow have changed but are still a bit helpful to spinners, and Iyer handles spin well, for he can bat at different gears and be flexible with his batting position. Expect LSG to go after him, especially since they need an Indian spin-hitter in the middle.
