Who will Mumbai Indians (MI) use the RTM on at the IPL 2025 auction?

Mumbai Indians (MI) retained five capped players before the IPL 2025 auction and have focused on keeping the core.

Mumbai Indians (MI) had the strongest Indian core in the previous cycle; even the uncapped players were laced with quality. They were the only side who could churn out a match-winning playing XI with only Indian players.

Hence, the mega auction was always bound to be harsh on them, for they had more than five quality players in the capped category and several in the uncapped section. But they have done well to retain their big guns ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

Mumbai Indians’ Current Retentions

Mumbai Indians retained five capped players before the auction and have focused on retaining the core. They have their main players back and hope to bring a unit around their retentions.

Their retentions are as follows:

  1. Jasprit Bumrah – INR 18 crores
  2. Suryakumar Yadav – INR 16.35 crores
  3. Hardik Pandya – INR 16.35 crores
  4. Rohit Sharma – INR 16.30 crores
  5. Tilak Varma – INR 8 crores

Why can’t Mumbai Indians use RTM on capped retentions?

Mumbai Indians have retained as many as five capped players, and the rules state no team can keep more than five capped players. While the total number of retentions allowed is six, the sixth should be uncapped.

MI have already kept five capped players, leaving no place for other capped retentions. However, MI still have one RTM to use on one of their uncapped players.

They had a few top-notch uncapped players and must be prudent with their choice. Most of them performed well in limited chances, and the task won’t be easy for the five-time champions.

Who will Mumbai Indians use the RTM on at the IPL 2025 auction?

Mumbai Indians have three prime options in the uncapped category – Nehal Wadhera, Naman Dhir, and Akash Madhwal. Nehal is a solid player of pace and spin and a solid player in the middle order.

He also provides a different dimension to the batting unit since he is an LHB. Further, he will be a long-term investment.

Naman Dhir is a pace-hitter who can be flexible with his batting position and bat anywhere in the middle order. He can hit from the first ball and bat at a high pace, as visible during the last season.

Meanwhile, Akash Madhwal is a skiddy pacer who can seam the ball off the deck. He has the pace and can hurry the batters off the deck, while his control over the yorkers is remarkable.

A lot will depend on how their price goes during the auction, for they will be in demand after their previous success in the league. However, MI will surely use RTM on at least one of them according to their needs during the auction.
