Why did Nitish Reddy get only INR 6 crores as SRH retention instead of 11 crores? EXPLAINED

SRH's retention slab will be as follows: Klaasen at INR 23 crores, Cummins at INR 18 crores, Head and Abhishek at INR 14 crores, and Nitish at INR 6 crores.

The buzz around IPL 2025 retentions and releases is aplenty, with several reports popping out now and then. The fresh one on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) suggests they have finalised their retentions, with Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Their retention slab will be as follows: Klaasen at INR 23 crores, Cummins at INR 18 crores, Head and Abhishek at INR 14 crores, and Nitish at INR 6 crores. Now the question is how can SRH give them an amount different to the retention slab set by the IPL.

According to the retention slab, the first capped retention will get INR 18 crores, the second at INR 14 crores, the third at INR 11 crores, the fourth at INR 18 crores, and the fifth at INR 14 crores. The total amount will be equal to INR 75 crores.

Hence, if a team decides to retain all five capped players ahead of the auction, they can choose to divide INR 75 crores as per their wish. It’s not necessary to follow the retention slab, but the amount shouldn’t be less than INR 75 crores.

Further, a franchise can also pay more than INR 75 crores to their five retentions, and that higher amount will be deducted from the purse. It all depends on how the agreement with the player before the deadline goes.

However, the rule to divide the amount is only applicable if they retain all five capped players. For example, if a team decides to retain only four players, then at least INR 61 crores will be deducted from the purse, and they can’t split that INR 61 crores as per their wish.

They have to divide it like: 18 crores, 14 crores, 11 crores, and 18 crores. Similarly, for three retentions, the amount will at least be: (18+14+11) crores = INR 43 crores.

Again, this sum can be higher than the retention slab if a team wishes to retain a player at an amount higher than the retention slab, but that higher amount will deducted and not the amount equal to the retention slab. Teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians (MI), who have several quality players, will benefit from this law.

They are likely to retain as many as five capped players. Anyways, the changed dynamics of the IPL mega auction has certainly made it more interesting than ever.
