KKR will have INR 51 crores available for the IPL 2025 auction, rather than the initially expected INR 63 crores
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially announced their list of retained players for the IPL 2025 season, releasing the list on the deadline day.
The franchise have chosen to retain six players — Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, Andre Russell, Ramandeep Singh, and Harshit Rana. This choice reflects their strategy to maintain a solid core team.
Rinku Singh is the top retention for INR 13 crores, followed by Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, and Sunil Narine, each retained for INR 12 crores. Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh, both uncapped players, have been retained for INR 4 crores each.
With these six retentions, Kolkata Knight Riders have spent a total of INR 57 crores (13 crores + 12 crores + 12 crores + 12 crores + 4 crores + 4 crores) out of the allocated INR 120 crores purse for each IPL team. While basic calculations suggest that KKR would have INR 63 crores remaining, they will actually enter the auction with INR 51 crores due to the IPL rules.

According to IPL rules, the total retention value for four capped players must be at least INR 61 crores (18 + 14 + 11 + 18). While teams have the flexibility to distribute this amount as they wish, the overall total must still meet the minimum requirement. As a result, even though Kolkata Knight Riders spent INR 49 crores on their 4 capped players, they will still face a deduction of INR 61 crores from their capped retentions.
Additionally, INR 8 crores will be deducted for their two uncapped retentions, as each uncapped player can be retained for INR 4 crores, bringing the total deductions to INR 69 crores. Consequently, KKR will have INR 51 crores available for the IPL 2025 auction, rather than the initially expected INR 63 crores. This means they will lose out on INR 12 crores that they never paid to their players, and they will not receive that amount in the auction either.
According to IPL rules, Kolkata Knight Riders cannot use a Right to Match (RTM) card as they have already retained the maximum number of six players.
