Washington Sundar’s credentials have risen significantly after his heroics in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were the second-best team in IPL 2024, finishing as runners-up in the season. Ahead of the next season, SRH have retained as many as five capped players and used INR 75 crores.
They have retained their core who performed exceptionally well last season. They have made prudent choices and will look to prepare a strong squad around them.
As of the latest retention announcements, SRH have secured the services of five capped players:

According to IPL guidelines, a team can retain as many as five capped players via retentions before the auction or using Right To Match (RTM) during the auction. Additionally, they can keep a maximum of two uncapped players, but the total number of retentions shouldn’t exceed six.
There’s no cap on Indian or overseas players. So, in SRH’s case, they have already retained five capped players, leaving no place for more capped retentions, and Washington Sundar is capped.
SRH can use an RTM on one of their uncapped players but not on Sundar or any capped player. They have exhausted their maximum capped retention before the auction.
Sunrisers Hyderabad might have exhausted all five retentions, but there’s still a way to get Washington Sundar back. They can re-bid for him during the auction and get him back by giving the most sum.
That’s the only way to get him back. He will be up for sale during the IPL 2025 auction, and several teams will go after him after his recent rise.
The good thing is that no other team can raise his price once his bid ends since he was with SRH only. Hence, SRH might go after him during the auction.
Washington Sundar’s credentials have risen significantly after his heroics in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand. He is a quality off-spinner who is more than capable with the willow.
He can operate in different phases, including powerplay, by bowling tight lines and cramping batters. Sundar’s best batting value comes when he bats up in the order, for he can weave long innings and handles pace and spin well.
Sundar hasn’t been used precisely by any team, but the potential is immense with both bat and ball. Further, he can also be a long-term investment, making him a complete package.
