David Warner: I had four bad games, never got an explanation why I was dropped as captain

Sunrisers Hyderabad and David Warner shared one of the most cordial player-team relationships in the Indian Premier League, but much to the disappointment of the franchise’s fans, it isn’t so anymore. Warner was dropped after a horrendous run in the Indian leg of the 2021 edition, and after two poor starts in UAE, he never was found in the dugout of the Hyderabad unit.

The Aussie opener finally opened up on the most intricate story of this season’s IPL. Whilst he remained a little unsure as to how to answer it, he mentioned that communication between the player and management was poor when it came to dropping him as captain. He also felt that most decisions taken in the club weren’t unanimous.

“I am not 100 per cent sure how to answer that. With the utmost respect for the owners, Trevor Baylis, Laxman, Moody and Murali, when a decision gets made, it has to be a unanimous one. You don’t know who the person is going for you and who isn’t.

The other disappointing thing for me was not being explained why I was dropped as captain. If you want to go along the lines of form, it is a difficult one because, I guess whatever you have done in the past would have some weight moving forward, you would think,” Warner said in an interview with Sports Today.

David Warner uncertain about his position next year

The dashing southpaw has remained uncertain over his future in the Indian Premier League. It seems likely that the franchise will retain Rashid Khan and Kane Williamson ahead of the mega auction next season, but uncertainty looms large over some other crucial players in the mix like David Warner, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jonny Bairstow.

David Warner led Sunrisers to their only IPL title in 2016.

Warner, who scored 4,014 runs since moving to the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014. No overseas cricketer in the Indian Premier League has more runs than him and is the fifth-highest run-scorer in tournament history. He was backed enormously by the SRH fans for the years of service he provided, and Warner said he will salute the crowd when he arrives in Hyderabad next season, as an SRH player or for some other team.

“Hopefully, I’ll get to come back out there, whether it be in the SRH uniform or someone else’s, I will salute you all when I come back to play in Hyderabad,” Warner said.
