Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni’s returns with the bat have been on the wane since his retirement from international cricket back in August 2020.

From the start of last year’s edition of the IPL, Dhoni has aggregated only 296 runs in the CSK jersey at a poor average of 14.09 and strike-rate of just 108.42.

In this period of decline, one major problem area for the great wicketkeeper-batter has been the inability to rotate and loft the spinners like he used to in his heyday.

At his peak, Dhoni played freely against spinners but now finds it a challenge to dictate terms. Spinners, particular wrist-spinners have troubled Dhoni a lot. According to Cricviz, Dhoni’s average against the googlies has now slipped to a disastrous 7.6 runs per dismissal in T20 cricket.

 

In this year’s edition of the IPL, we have seen Dhoni get out to KKR’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy on the googly before and the latest bowler to deceive him on the googly was PBKS’ young promising Ravi Bishnoi.

MS Dhoni has had a prolonged rut with the bat.

Bishnoi got MS Dhoni with a googly in his team’s last league stage encounter of the IPL 2021 in Dubai on Thursday (October 7). Bowling to the legend in over No.12 of the CSK innings, the unorthodox wristspinner dismissed him with a sharp incoming ball that Dhoni could only edge onto his stumps.

The wicket-ball arrived on the final delivery of the 12th over. Up until that point in his innings, Dhoni had looked to be aggressive against Bishnoi, trying to get under the youngster’s skin and make his and CSK’s life easier.

The right-hander had struck a couple of fours, including a thunderous slap that nearly surpassed the boundary through the extra cover region. However, Bishnoi had the last laugh when he ultimately managed to nail his attempted googly, making Dhoni play a completely different line.

With Dhoni getting his downswing going at an incorrect angle, he could only inside edge the ball onto his middle and leg stump. The batter was initially done in the air, as the delivery from Bishnoi drifted sharply from the right of him before dipping into him and inducing the error.

As MS Dhoni made his long walk back, Cricviz made a post on his poor numbers against the googlies in all T20s and fans immediately started expressing their disappointment and worry over an alarming dip in CSK captain’s returns. Some even mocked him and took sly digs at him.

Dhoni has now made only 96 runs from 14 games in IPL 2021, with an average of 13.71 and strike-rate of 95.04. CSK will hope that he can quickly overcome this dip and leave his mark with the bat as they approach the final stage of the tournament.
