He now replaces former India batter Manoj Tiwary, who retired at the end of last domestic season.
Ahead of the upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season, the Bengal team has named a 40-year-old veteran to lead the side. The development was announced late by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) on Friday (October 4).
Anustup Majumdar has been handed over the captaincy reins to lead the side. He now replaces former India batter Manoj Tiwary, who retired at the end of last domestic season.
Majumdar has become known as the ‘crisis man’ for Bengal cricket, having repeatedly stepped in to help the team during critical moments over the past few years.
“We were looking for a responsible, experienced player and will be available throughout the season,” a CAB official said.
Speaking of Anustup’s achievements, the middle-order batter has played for India ‘A’ in 2012 and was in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad and played four matches for Pune Warriors in the 2012 IPL.

On the other hand, ace India pacer Mohammad Shami, who was expected to make a comeback from injury in the Ranji trophy is currently still on hold.
Mohammad Shami was touted to play a couple of domestic matches before the highly-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy, slated to be held in November-December. But the 34-year-old is yet to recover from his right heel injury.
One intriguing change is the removal of senior fast bowler Ishan Porel from the main squad, placing him on the standby list.
Seventeen-year-old pacer Yudhajit Guha has been handed his first call-up after showcasing outstanding performances for the India Under-19 team against Australia. He opened the bowling in the second and third youth ODIs held in Puducherry last month. Additionally, Rishabh Vivek and Rohit Kumar are also making their debut in the fast bowling lineup.
