Anil Kumble identifies flaws in Rohit Sharma’s technique that led to early dismissals against pacers

Rohit averages a mere 23.44 and has been dismissed nine times in 17 outings against right-arm pacers in India in 2024.

Anil Kumble identified flaws in Rohit Sharma’s batting technique, pointing out a pattern in his dismissals against right-arm pacers. On Jio Cinema, he highlighted how he is getting squared up, thinking the ball is coming into him but straightening off the deck or moving away slightly.

“These kinds of dismissals, if you go back to even to the Bangladesh Test match when it was seaming away from him, the ball which holds its line from that angle, is troubling Rohit Sharma consistently. Tim Southee exploited that. And today Matt Henry is exploited the same length. He opens up that right shoulder, which certainly makes him vulnerable.”

“And if you look at the seam, it’s just holding its line. It’s looked to go away from the right-hander. There’s not much swing here. The ball just hits the deck, stays with the line, and he opens up thinking that the ball’s coming back in. So that’s a technical concern which needs to be addressed because you have a five-Test series against Australia and he is a very important player for India, especially at the top of the order.”

Rohit averages a mere 23.44 and has been dismissed nine times in 17 outings against right-arm pacers in India in 2024. While he has got a few good balls at the top, the Indian captain has shown recklessness early in the innings, leading to his dismissals.

Rohit Sharma’s form a major concern ahead of Australia tour

Rohit Sharma has endured a lean patch this home Test season, starting from the Bangladesh series in September. He has scored only 122 runs at a mediocre average of 13.55 in nine innings, with only one fifty.

Since the Bangladesh series, he has had six single-digit scores, including a duck, in nine outings. His form will surely concern the team management ahead of the Australia tour.

More importantly, Rohit has shown a pattern in his dismissals, and Aussie quicks will exploit it on quicker decks. He has committed early on the front foot and looks to access the leg-side region, which has squared him up several times.

His struggles against incoming deliveries will make him prone to Mitchell Starc, and if he shows another loophole, the Australia tour will be harsh. Just one more innings and Rohit’s next outing will be in Perth, where such flaws will exacerbate things for him.
