The BCCI officials weren’t very pleased that Jasprit Bumrah, the team’s main fast bowler and vice-captain, was rested for the third Test.
According to PTI, the BCCI held a detailed review after India’s unexpected 0-3 loss to New Zealand. Topics discussed included the choice of a spin-friendly pitch for the Mumbai Test, resting key bowler Jasprit Bumrah, and head coach Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style. Captain Rohit Sharma, selection chairman Ajit Agarkar, and Gambhir (who joined online) attended the meeting, along with BCCI officials Jay Shah and Roger Binny.
Reports indicate that team management’s decisions during the series were questioned, and there was also talk about Gambhir’s coaching approach, which is quite different from former coach Rahul Dravid’s style, as the team continues to adapt to it.
“It was a six hour marathon meeting which was obviously on cards after such a debacle. India are going on a tour of Australia and the BCCI would obviously like to ensure that the team is back on track and would like to know how the think-tank are going about it,” a senior BCCI source privy to development told PTI.

The BCCI officials weren’t very pleased that Jasprit Bumrah, the team’s main fast bowler and vice-captain, was rested for the third Test. They were also unhappy with the decision to prepare a spin-friendly pitch after India had already lost on a similar type of surface in Pune.
“Bumrah’s absence was discussed although it was a precautionary move. Opting for a rank turner despite India not faring well on these tracks are some of the issues that came up for discussion,” the source informed.
The three were asked to suggest ways to improve. It’s unclear if Gambhir’s coaching style was directly questioned, but it appears some in the team’s management don’t fully agree with his approach.
The selection of all-rounder Nitish Reddy for BGT series, who has only played 22 first-class matches and made his T20I debut last month, along with young fast bowler Harshit Rana, who has only played 10 Ranji Trophy matches, wasn’t fully supported by everyone, as neither has appeared in an international Test match.
After a home series whitewash defeat against New Zealand, the Indian Test cricket team’s next challenge is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, starting on November 22.
To qualify for the WTC final, India must win at least 4 out of the 5 matches. The Indian team will depart for Australia in two batches on November 10 and 11.
