Watch: Glenn Maxwell marks his arrival in style; underarms direct hit to dismiss Tilak Varma

Glenn Maxwell earned RCB the prize scalp of MI's in-form Tilak Varma via an eye-catching run-out in IPL 2022.

Before he takes his stance and yields his willow for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2022, Glenn Maxwell left his imprint in the field via an excellent run-out in his team’s league-stage encounter against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Saturday (April 9).

MI’s uncapped Indian middle-order batter Tilak Verma was at the receiving end of one of Maxwell’s terrific pieces of athleticism and agility at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The Australian unleashed his superman heroics with a brilliant throw at the stumps, making Varma pay big for what was evidently an ill-suggested run.

Hitting a delivery through the short cover region, the left-hander committed too early to a single, not realising that he was about to fall prey to an ever-alert Glenn Maxwell.

The eye-catching run-out was seen in full glory on the penultimate ball of the 10th over in MI’s first-innings. Facing RCB quick Akash Deep, Varma hit the ball in front of the short cover fielder Glenn Maxwell and went for a suicidal run.

From the moment he hit the ball, Varma just scooted for the single and stayed committed to it even as Maxwell got around the ball and pulled off one of the run-outs of the season.

The Australian maverick dived full-stretched and made a successful direct throw despite having only one stump to aim at from his angle.

It was as great a fielding effort as one would seen, as Maxwell had both his feet in the air when he made his throw and caught Varma short of his ground at the other end.

Glenn Maxwell’s return augurs well for an RCB side hoping to successfully make it through the league stage of IPL 2022. The smashing Australian batter, an integral part of RCB’s plans through the IPL 2021, was retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction in Bangalore in February.

Maxwell’s retention was much-deserved. The explosive right-hander made a whopping 513 runs in IPL 2021 at an average of 42.75 and strike-rate of 144.10.
