India’s semifinal hopes sink after Pakistan drop eight catches in Women’s T20 World Cup game vs New Zealand

New Zealand's win meant both India and Pakistan were knocked out of the competition.

As if India’s fielding has been poor this tournament, Pakistan went a level below with their efforts on the field in a must-win fixture against New Zealand tonight. They dropped as many as eight catches in the first innings in one of the most horrendous fielding shows ever.

The drops started from the second delivery of the fifth over when Muneeba Ali couldn’t hold a sharp chance off Nida Dar’s bowling. She should have caught it while it was a tough chance, especially when the wicket was as big as Suzie Bates.

Then, Pakistan dropped catches on the second delivery of the sixth over, the third delivery of the eighth over, and the fifth ball of the 16th set. While they caught a few in between, the procession of dropping catches didn’t stop at all.

Pakistan dropped four more chances on the second ball of the 18th over and then went on to drop as many as three catches in the final set – on the first delivery, third, and fifth delivery. That took the count to eight, with Nida Dar’s bowling alone seeing five catches getting down in her spell.

India and Pakistan knocked out of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

New Zealand registered a 54-run win in their final league game to seal their place in the semifinal of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. This win meant both India and Pakistan were knocked out of the competition.

Batting first, New Zealand could only make 110/6, with Suzie Bates (28) and Brooke Halliday (22) chipping in with useful runs. For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu snared three wickets, whereas three other bowlers got a wicket each.

During the chase, Pakistan had to chase it down within 10.3 overs to qualify for the next round and attempted for it. However, they kept losing wickets in the process, and batters couldn’t build partnerships at any stage.

Hence, Pakistan were bundled on a mere 56 in 11.4 overs, with only Fatima Sana (21) and Muneeba Ali (15) reaching double digits. Consequently, they fell short by 54 runs and crashed out of the tournament with India.
