Spencer Johnson played for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024
In the latest episode of The Unplayable Podcast Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson, who also plays for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, stated that he finds inspiration from Jasprit Bumrah. Johnson, like Bumrah, wants to be the best in all three forms of cricket, but his growth has been momentarily halted by an unfortunate injury.
Johnson suffered a side strain in August while representing the Oval Invincibles in the Hundred, which forced him to miss Australia’s tour of the UK. However, now back in Adelaide, he has resumed bowling at full intensity with his complete run-up. He is working towards a return in South Australia’s upcoming One-Day Cup match, scheduled for October 25, as he looks to regain full fitness.

Since his professional debut with the Brisbane Heat, the 27-year-old Johnson has already achieved a lot. He played in the IPL and Major League Cricket (MLC), won titles in the BBL and the Hundred, and made his debut for Australia in both the ODI and T20 formats in just 20 months of his career. He has played in one ODI and five T20Is for his nation thus far.
Johnson was bought by Gujarat Titans in the auction for the 2024 Indian Premier League season for 50 lakhs. Throughout the season, he played in 5 matches and took four wickets. One of the pleasures of Johnson’s time was the opportunity to play against the player from whom he gets inspiration, Bumrah, during the Titans’ match against the Mumbai Indians.
“He is unbelievable. He’s the mould for all three formats. We played against him, and you are in awe while watching him,” Johnson said about Bumrah.
Jasprit Bumrah is widely regarded as one of the best all-format bowlers in the world today. Bumrah is still his team’s preferred bowler because of his ability to swing the new ball, deliver lethal yorkers at the end, and perform well under pressure. He is one of the hardest bowlers to deal with because of his distinctive bowling action, good pace, and variety.
Bumrah’s success has made him an inspiration for many young fast bowlers, including Johnson. As Johnson works toward full recovery and aims to make his mark across formats, he hopes to follow in Bumrah’s footsteps and become a reliable all-format bowler for Australia.
