KL Rahul faced an injury scare during a match simulation session at the WACA in Perth on Friday morning.
The 32-year-old Rahul opened the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal as India made plans to potentially replace captain Rohit Sharma, who is expected to miss the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia at Optus Stadium, Perth next week.
Reports from the venue indicate that Rahul was struck on his right forearm/elbow by a bouncy short delivery. Although he attempted to continue batting with assistance from the physio, Rahul eventually decided to walk off the field.
KL Rahul has been going through a rough patch after being initially considered for a middle-order spot ahead of India’s home Test series against New Zealand. He had the backing of captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir at the time.
Rahul was dropped after the first Test in Bengaluru, following India’s heavy 3-0 series defeat. He was then included in the India A squad for the recent second unofficial match against Australia A in Melbourne.
The Indian batter had a tough time when he was moved back to the top of the order for an opening audition alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is named as a back-up for Rohit Sharma in India’s Test squad. Rahul scored just 4 and 10, with his dismissal in the second innings, where he offered no shot, and the ball hit the middle stump, drawing heavy criticism.
KL Rahul, with an average of 33.87 from 51 Tests, has struggled in Australia, managing only 187 runs across nine innings.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins on the 22nd, with the first Test taking place at Optus Stadium in Perth.
