With less than two days to go for the second Test, KL Rahul attended the press conference and answered various questions.
With Rohit Sharma set to return for the second Test, there has been a lot of uncertainty around KL Rahul’s batting position. Naturally, Rohit is an opener and has found ample success at the top, but in his absence, Rahul opened the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Perth Test.
He exceeded at the top, scoring 26 & 77 in tough conditions and was among the most comfortable batters in the first innings when the ball was moving significantly. Hence, the team would want him to continue opening the innings, but they face a major dilemma with Rohit returning.
With less than two days to go for the second Test, KL Rahul attended the press conference and answered various questions; when asked about his batting position, he didn’t reveal it. He exclaimed that he had been asked to keep it a secret, and they would know his spot until the captain revealed or the match started.
“I have been told [about my position], but I have also been told not to share it. You will have to wait for day one or maybe when the captain comes tomorrow.”
While nothing conclusive can be drawn from the warm-up game against the Prime Minister’s XI, Rohit Sharma batted in the middle order, at No.4. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal continued opening, which gives a clue of what to expect.
According to ESPNcricinfo, even during the practice session, Rahul paired with Jaiswal to start the drill, followed by Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli before Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant had a crack. If this is something to go by, expect Rohit to be slotted at No.5 in the Day-Night fixture, even though that was just a net session.

Both Rohit and KL have previous experience in both roles in Test cricket. Both have previously opened the innings and batted in the middle order for India.
It will eventually boil down to who handles the new pink ball better because that’s where the game will be decided. Both are skilled enough to bat at any position and ace it.
