Kusal Mendis arrested for causing road accident killing 64 year old man

Sri Lankan middle order batsman Kusal Mendis has landed himself in troubled waters after a fatal accident at Pandura, in which a 64 year old cyclist was killed after a collision with Mendis’ car.

According to reports from the Sri Lankan media, the unfortunate incident took place at the 13th KM post in the Horethuduwa area in Panadura at 5:30 a.m. this morning. Mendis has been produced before a doctor for an examination and will be subsequently produced before court, mostly likely in the next 48 hours.

Police Spokesperson SSP Jaliya Senaratne confirmed the news of Mendis’ arrest. Also it has been learnt that the victim was a resident of Gorakapola area in Panadura. The initial police statement made no mention of whether either Mendis or the victim were under the influence of alcohol.

The 25-year-old batsman has represented Sri Lanka in 44 Tests and 76 ODIs. Mendis was part of the national squad which had resumed training after the COVID-19 lockdown. He has scored 2,995 runs at an average of 37 in Tests and 2,167 runs at an average of 30 in the ODIs. Mendis has also played 26 T20Is in which he has scored 484 runs at an average of 18.6.

For now, Sri Lanka’s international assignments are on hold due to COVID-19, that included a series against India. To add to that, Sri Lankan Cricket is going through a big mess, be it individual players, or the government alleging that 2011 World Cup final was fixed. Iconic cricketers such as Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Aravinda de Silva have had to put up with the hassle of being questioned by the police on the same issue. But the investigation was closed after widespread protests in the nation.
