Mohammed Shami hasn’t played competitive cricket since the World Cup 2023, where he ended as the leading wicket-taker.
Mohammed Shami, who has been out of action for almost a year now, is slowly regaining full fitness and will soon play competitive cricket. A report published by The Indian Express has revealed a fresh development in his case, which has come as pleasing news for India.
According to the report, Shami will play two Ranji Trophy fixtures for his state side Bengal before taking the plane to Australia. He is expected to join the Bengal team in Bengaluru for the fourth round against Karnataka and feature in the fifth-round game against Madhya Pradesh in Indore, both away matches for his domestic side.
“He is not available for this match (vs Kerala), but we are hopeful that Shami will join us for games against Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. He is a valuable player for India and the team his service will be required for the Australia series,” Laxmi Ratan Shuka, the coach of Bengal, told The Indian Express.
Recently, Shami revealed his plans, stating he would like to get a few red-ball games in the domestic season before going to Australia. That will help him get into the rhythm and have some necessary match practice, for it’s never easy for a speedster to return after such a lengthy layoff.
The Indian team will leave for Australia a couple of days after the end of the New Zealand series, which concludes on November 5 in Mumbai. However, Shami won’t travel with them since he is slotted to feature for his Ranji side, and the matches are scheduled after the team flies to Australia.
Shami will soon fly Down Under and play in the XI straightaway if everything goes well during his comeback. Even Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, stated he doesn’t want an undercooked Shami in Australia.

He hasn’t played competitive cricket since the World Cup 2023, where he ended as the leading wicket-taker. He underwent surgery in London earlier this year to repair his Achilles tendon.
Initially, he was supposed to return to the national side for the New Zealand series, but a swollen knee derailed his comeback plans. Shami’s chances of returning for the Border Gavaskar Trophy will become bleak if he suffers further setbacks.
