Not Will Jacks or Rickelton, Kaif Marks Rising India Star as Rohit Sharma’s Opening Partner at Mumbai Indians for IPL 2025

One of the major questions for Mumbai Indians is who will open the batting with Rohit Sharma, especially after Ishan Kishan’s move to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The IPL 2025 auction has wrapped up, and Mumbai Indians have finalized their squad. Having retained five players prior to the auction, they acquired 18 new players, bringing their total squad to 23.

Mumbai Indians have added Will Jacks and Ryan Rickleton to their squad, both of whom could potentially open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma.

Kaif Suggests Tilak Varma to Open with Rohit Sharma

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes that Tilak Varma is likely to be the opening partner for Rohit Sharma.

Speaking on Star Sports, Kaif further suggests that Suryakumar Yadav will continue to bat at No. 3, a position where he has consistently excelled. Hardik Pandya is expected to bat around No. 5, with Will Jacks likely coming in after that. This new batting order will add a fresh dynamic to Mumbai’s lineup in IPL 2025.

“Will Jacks will have to come down the order. I see Tilak Varma and Rohit Sharma opening this time. After that, Suryakumar Yadav will come at No. 3. He always plays at No. 3 and generally plays well too. You can keep Hardik Pandya around No. 5 and Jacks will come after that,” he said.

Kaif Highlights Robin Minz as a Potential Addition to Mumbai Indians

Kaif mentioned that while Mumbai Indians have some solid batters in their squad, they still need a young, potentially lesser-known batter to fill a gap in their lineup. He suggested that a player like Robin Minz, a wicketkeeper-batter, could be a good addition. Despite this, he highlighted that the team made a strong recovery on Day 2 of the auction after a quieter start on Day 1, successfully strengthening their squad.

“Naman Dhir is also there. So these are the six. You will have to get a young batter here (potentially Robin Minz as a wicketkeeper-batter). One batter might not be that known. So one thing is lacking there but they made a good comeback from yesterday (Day 1) to today (Day 2),” Kaif observed.
