Pat Cummins hilariously turns down David Warner’s offer for a return to Test cricket for India series

Warner played his last Test earlier this year against Pakistan in Sydney

Australia captain Pat Cummins hinted in a playful way that David Warner won’t be part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Warner played his last Test earlier this year against Pakistan in Sydney and officially stepped away from international cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup. But recently, Warner surprised everyone by saying he’s open to a comeback for the India series, even though the team is still searching for a solid opening partner for Usman Khawaja.

“Im always available, just got to pick up the phone. I’m aways dead serious. Let’s be honest, the guys have played one red-ball game since their last Test matches in February, so I’ve almost had the same preparation. Honestly, if they really needed myself for this series, I’m more than happy to play the next Shield game and go out there and play,” said Warner to Code Sports.

Cummins, aware of Warner’s surprising comment about making a comeback, had a funny response during his interview on the YouTube podcast, The Grade Cricketer.

“Dave, we’re very interested. Were taking it very seriously and we’ll be in touch, mate,” Cummins said. “I did speak to Dave a couple of days ago. I cant remember if he reached out or I did… he’s like, “What do you think?, and I was like, Yeah, good luck with Sydney Thunder and I look forward to your comments on Fox!” he added.

Australia’s Struggle to Find a Stable Opening Partner

Australia wants to improve after struggling against India in recent years. One of their biggest challenges is finding a good opener to partner with Usman Khawaja. Players like Cameron Bancroft, Sam Konstas, and Marcus Harris are being considered, but the team hasn’t made a final decision yet, so the spot is still open.

India will begin its tour of Australia with a few practice matches and then play a five-match Test series from November 22 onwards. The matches are scheduled to take place at Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. Australia will be eager to win back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and finally break their 10-year losing streak against India.

As a passionate cricket fan I have been watching the game for over 20 years, and it has been a constant part of my life for as long as I can remember. From childhood, I enjoyed following matches and players, and over time that passion only grew stronger. What began as admiration for the sport slowly turned into a deeper connection, where I found joy in expressing my thoughts through writing. For me, writing about cricket feels natural. It doesn’t feel like work, but rather a reflection of the love I have for the game that has always been close to my heart.
