WATCH: Ridiculous catch and outrageous throw – Shreyas Iyer’s stunning act in the field
Shreyas Iyer is one of the best talents in world cricket, and if he can’t perform with the bat, he will find a way to make his presence felt one way or the other. That is what happened during the first qualifier between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings. He did not get runs with the bat in the first innings, but his electrifying contribution on the field proved to be pivotal in dragging the game deep.
It all started for the 26-year-old when he picked a magnificent catch to dismiss Robin Uthappa. Uthappa skied it towards cow-corner, where Iyer was sizing himself to pick a catch on the edge of the boundary. After completing the catch, his concentration got deterred with the mid-wicket fielder running past him, but he maintained his composure and body balance. He threw it up, went beyond the boundary, pulled himself back almost instantly and completed the catch.
He then chipped in with another catch that helped Delhi dismiss Shardul Thakur, who was a failed experiment for Chennai. It was a regulation catch at long-on for Iyer, but what he did later to deny the Chennai batters a brace was simply outstanding.
Gaikwad found the gap between the two deep fielders at long-on and mid-wicket and was keen ongoing for the second. But Shreyas Iyer covered the ground in double-quick time, and followed it up with a lightning throw towards Kagiso Rabada. Rayudu was burning his lungs to complete the second at the non-striker, but that throw was just too good from Iyer.
Here’s the video of that juggling catch from Shreyas Iyer
The throw that ran Rayudu out
Shreyas Iyer, who was ruled out of the Indian leg due to an injury, lost the captaincy to Rishabh Pant, and to not let the momentum slide away, the latter continued. He chipped in with some decent contributions with the bat and is knocking on the Indian selectors’ door to move him from the reserves of the ICC T20 World Cup to the main squad.
