India Under-19 had a winning start to their 2022 Under-19 World Cup campaign. They beat South Africa Under-19 by 45 runs to get off the mark in Group B. Yash Dhull, Raj Bawa and Vicky Ostwal were the stars of the game.

India Under-19 skipper Yash Dhull led from the front with his 82. He helped his side recover from 11/2 and post a fighting total of 232. Fast bowler Rajvardhan Hangargekar got India the early breakthrough and removed South African opener, Ethan John Cunningham, in the first over of the innings.

But it was left-arm spinner Vicky Ostwal who hogged the limelight with a five-wicket haul and left-arm seamer Raj Bawa chipped in with four wickets. Every time there was a partnership building either Ostwal or Bawa brought India back in the game with timely wickets.

Ostwal spun a web around the South African batters and the lower order batters didn’t have much clue playing some quality spin bowling. Ostwal even bowled a couple of jaffas which ended up being voted as the Nissan Play of the Day.

ICC’s Twitter handle posted a video of Ostwal knocking over Mickey Copeland with a classical left-arm spinner’s dismissal and revealed that it was that delivery that won the Nissan Play of the Day. Ostwal pitched the ball on middle and leg and got the ball to turn a bit. Copeland had no clue whatsoever and lost his stumps.

Ostwal was awarded the player of the match for his figures of 5/28 from his quota of 10 overs.

India Under-19 next faced Ireland Under-19 on the 19th of January at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad.
