Who is Dan Lawrence who made his England debut today?

Dan Lawrence, the 23 year old English batsman made his Test debut for England against Sri Lanka in the first Test match at the Galle Stadium. Lawrence earned his debut after Rory Burns was granted a paternity leave.

Dan Lawrence did not have much to do on Day one of the first Test as the English bowlers decimated the Sri Lankan batting lineup in the first innings, restricting them to a score of just 135 runs. The visitors ended the day with a score of 127 runs for the loss of two wickets, trailing Sri Lanka by just eight runs. Lawrence is expected to be the next man in for the visitors, coming in at number five.

Impressive performances on the domestic circuit earns Lawrence an international call-up

Dan Lawrence plays for the Essex County Cricket Club. He has played 74 first class matches and has scored 3948 runs at an average of just over 37. He has ten hundreds and 18 half-centuries to his name on the first class circuit. Lawrence can also roll his arm on a few occasions, as he has picked up nine first class wickets so far.

He made his first class debut in 2015 against Kent and has been a regular in the Essex team ever since. The English man was also a part of the Brisbane Heat in the ongoing KFC Big Bash League. In the four matches he played this season, he managed to score just 41 runs.

His best performance on the domestic circuit this season came against Sussex where he scored 81 runs and picked two wickets for just three runs. In the 2019 County Championship Division 1 season, Lawrence scored 725 runs in 14 matches at an average of 38. In the 2018 season, he was part of the winning Essex side that lifted the County Championship title.
