RCB star sidelined for Border-Gavaskar Trophy, could affect IPL retention chances

Cameron Green set to miss entire Australian summer

In the latest development as the build-up towards the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Australia are set to be without star all-rounder Cameron Green after his injury during the England summer turned out to be worse than anticipated.

According to the latest report on Cricket Et Al by popular journalist Peter Lalor, Green has no chance of being fit for the first Test against India at Perth on November 22.

Its not just that, Green might actually miss the entire summer with the back soreness he complained of during the England tour. The 25-year-old was hoped to be available to play as a batter alone at the very least, but the latest development is a huge blow to Australia’s plans for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that they hope to reclaim.

Green is a total cog in the Australian line-up and is seen as the future of their Test middle-order, so much so that Steve Smith was moved up to open the batting to accomodate Green in the middle-order. He has played 28 Tests for Australia with a batting average of 36 and has taken 35 wickets at 35.

If Green misses out, Australia might be forced to find an alternative all-rounder with Pat Cummins stating earlier that he expected heavier bowling workloads for the all-rounders, Green and Mitch Marsh. Aaron Hardie is a promising prospect, who came into his own in limited-overs cricket in England and could be in line for a Test call-up.

IPL consequences for Cameron Green and RCB quandary

Another concern for Green personally would be his IPL contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Traded in from Mumbai Indians for a whopping INR 17.5 crores, Green was expected to be one of the retentions for the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

But with his injury timeline uncertain, RCB might have to change their retention plans, and it could significantly impact the auction dynamics for the franchise. Besides Green, RCB also have Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell in their ranks, although his performances in the last season didn’t inspire much confidence. A more compelling option is England all-rounder and rising star Will Jacks, who hit a century for the franchise in 2024.

While Green’s retention was anyway doubtful given his exaggerated mini auction value, RCB would have hoped to RTM the Australian at a lower price in the auction. But with the latest injury concern, Green might not gather as much interest from franchises in the IPL 2025 auction.
