With both Rohit and Shubman Gill available for the second Test, there could be changes in the batting order.
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, speaking to news agency PTI, shared his thoughts on the batting lineup for India’s second Test against Australia in Adelaide, starting December 6. Rohit Sharma, who missed the first Test due to the birth of his second child, will return to lead the team.
In his absence, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings, with their 201-run partnership in the second innings setting a new record for the highest partnership by an Indian pair in Australia.
With both Rohit and Shubman Gill available for the second Test, there could be changes in the batting order. During India’s practice match in Canberra, Rohit batted at No. 4, while Rahul and Jaiswal opened again, and Shubman Gill was slotted at No. 3. Despite these changes, it is believed that Rohit will not bat lower than No. 3 in the upcoming Test.
The former spinner stated that he doesn’t see Rohit coming in at No. 5 or 6, as the top four positions should be filled by the team’s most dependable players.
According to him, it would be best for the team if Rohit opens with Jaiswal, and Rahul moves to No. 3. Alternatively, Rohit could bat at No. 3 himself. He believes that having Rohit at the top would provide the team with a solid foundation.

This is especially important in a day-night Test match, where the conditions can be challenging. With this adjustment, India can maximize its chances of a strong start and success in the second Test.
“I don’t see Rohit coming in at number five or six. Either Rohit will open with Yashasvi Jaiswal, with KL Rahul coming in at number three, or he will bat no later than number three,” Harbhajan told news agency PTI.
“Number six for Rohit wouldn’t be in best interest of the team. Your top four in batting order should be the four pillars and someone like Rohit at the top would only add greater fillip,” he added.
The second pink-ball Test will be played as a day-night match at the Adelaide Oval.
