‘We agreed to be cautious’: Sarfaraz Khan opens up on his viral reaction to deny Rishabh Pant a run

Sarfaraz's reaction had soon gone viral, given its animated nature.

Hosts India put their best forward after suffering a batting collapse in the first innings of the ongoing IND vs NZ 1st Test, getting bundled out for 46.

In the second innings, the Men in Blue made amends as all the top-order batters made meaningful contributions to help negate a 356-run deficit.

During India’s fightback, Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant scripted the highest Indian partnership of the match, stitching a game-changing stand of 177 runs.

While the duo were in the middle, there was a moment where Sarfaraz lost his calm while taking a run with Rishabh Pant. He could be seen jumping to deny Pant a run and looked extremely heated up.

Sarfaraz’s reaction had soon gone viral, given its animated nature.

Speaking at the presser after the end of Day 4, Sarfaraz later clarified the reason for his reaction.

Sarfaraz emphasized his intent to steer clear of any risky run-out situations that could lead to losing either of their wickets, particularly given Pant’s condition.

Earlier on Day 2, Pant had injured his left knee while misjudging a delivery during wicketkeeping, which made him more aware while running between the wickets.

Sarfaraz said, “We knew Rishabh was nursing a knee injury and was in some pain today, so we agreed to be cautious with our running. After calling for two, I recalled his condition mid-run, hence my reaction. Thank God, he survived that”.

Speaking about the match, while the Indian top-order delivered the goods and built a strong platform, the lower order couldn’t contribute much and add onto it.

India experienced a late collapse after tea, as they quickly lost their last four wickets—Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj and eventually posted a relatively easy target of 107 runs for the Kiwis.
