Rajasthan Royals star returns to national ODI team, in consideration for 2025 Champions Trophy

Shimron Hetmyer returns to the ODI squad after last playing in December 2023.

West Indies have announced their squad for the three-match ODI series against England, starting on Thursday in Antigua. Shimron Hetmyer has been brought back into the team for this series after last playing in December 2023.

Rajasthan Royals star Shimron Hetmyer replaces Alick Athanaze, marking the only change from the squad that just returned from the Sri Lanka tour, as the team prepares for the Champions Trophy which will be in Feb 2025.

Hetmyer did not travel with the team for the Sri Lanka tour due to personal reason, but has shown some very good form in the CPL, finishing fifth in the run-scorers’ list. His return will add some much-needed firepower to the batting lineup of West Indies, who face a strong England side, seeking to capitalise on the 2-1 series victory over them last year.

Shai Hope will lead the team, which also features 17-year-old batting talent Jewel Andrew, who made his debut at the end of the Sri Lanka series.

Meanwhile, England have arrived to the Caribbean for their third white-ball tour since 2022. For the three ODIs, Liam Livingstone will be the captain of the team, while Jos Buttler is still recovering from his calf injury that has kept him out since July.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy mentioned that playing against England is always exciting and reignites rivalry that everyone in the Caribbean looks forward to. He also noted that the West Indies team tends to play really well when they go up against England.

“Playing against England always provides a new challenge and reignites a rivalry that the players and the people of the Caribbean are eager for,” Daren Sammy, West Indies head coach, said. “Somehow, we West Indies always find a way to raise our game when we face England.

Both teams will compete in a series of 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is

West Indies and England will compete in a series of 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is. The first two ODIs will be held in Antigua, while the third ODI will take place in Barbados. The T20I series will consist of five matches, with the first two in Barbados and the last three in St. Lucia.
