Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan encounter bad start to their Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan have been out of the national side and are playing in the Ranji Trophy to reclaim their places, especially in the Test team.

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan didn’t have a great start to a fresh season of the Ranji Trophy, for they failed to create any impact in the first innings. Iyer got the worst possible start, registering an 8-ball duck during the game between Baroda and Mumbai in Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara.

Coming in at No.5, Iyer couldn’t open his account and was undone by Bhargav Bhatt. When he came to the crease, Mumbai had lost two quick wickets and required stability by a prudent partnership, but Iyer failed to last long, putting his team in further trouble.

Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan could only score 21 runs in 32 balls before losing his wicket during the Assam and Jharkhand game in Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. He came to bat at No.6 and got a decent start, looking set to unleash after playing a few deliveries.

However, just before he could motor along, Mukhtar Hussain cut his innings short. Kishan would have liked to have a bright start and made a statement as a captain in a fresh season but not to be.

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan looking to reclaim their places in the national team

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan have been out of the national side and are playing in the Ranji Trophy to reclaim their places, especially in the Test team. Both were excluded from the BCCI’s central contract earlier this year after they didn’t feature in the domestic tournaments.

Since then, the duo have been out of the squad, looking to make an impact in the domestic arena and press a case again. After the contract snub, Iyer has played in ODIs but has been out from the other two formats.

Meanwhile, Kishan has continuously been overlooked since returning to competitive cricket, even though he has featured in a few domestic competitions. Several batters have gone ahead in the pecking order in the longest format, and the only way to return is by piling on big runs.

A slow start to the most prestigious Indian domestic tournament won’t help them. However, the duo will have more opportunities to score in the coming days and should capitalise.
