Shubman Gill Doubtful for Perth Test after Hurting Himself During Match Simulation

Shubman Gill sustained this blow during the match simulation against India A in Perth.

In another massive blow for India ahead of the first Test against Australia, Shubman Gill has injured his thumb finger while trying to catch in slips. He sustained this blow during the match simulation against India A in Perth.

A few journalists covering the game from the ground confirmed this update, adding Gill is doubtful for the first Test, starting November 22 in Perth. He will be under observation and assessed for the next three days before a call is taken on his participation in the opening game.

Several players have already sustained blows on different parts in this match simulation, with plenty of reports popping up since yesterday. KL Rahul copped an injury to his right elbow while facing Prasidh Krishna and had to leave the field on a score of 29 for scans after consulting with the team physio.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Morning Herald reported, Virat Kohli underwent scans on Thursday (November 14) for an unspecified injury. However, that unknown injury wasn’t severe enough to keep him out of the match simulation against India A, where he scored 15 runs before losing his wicket.

Shubman Gill – an important cog in India’s batting lineup

A fresh injury report on Shubman Gill doesn’t bode well for India because he is a mainstay in India’s batting lineup and was slowly settling into a new role at No.3. His pace and strong backfoot game will be crucial for India, who are already light on experience and form.

Last time, he did well on his maiden Australia tour while opening the innings. Gill scored 259 runs at an average of 51.80 in six outings, including two fifties, and was among the biggest reasons behind India’s miraculous comeback after getting all-out on 36 in Adelaide.

He will play a crucial role at No.3 for India – a position held strongly by Cheteshwar Pujara, who was pivotal in India’s back-to-back series wins Down Under. Gill must play the same role in the upcoming series.

Gill will hope to recover in time and feature in the first game. India might miss Rohit Sharma, and if they lose Shubman Gill, the problems will exacerbate further.
