Former India star labels Gambhir’s supporters as ‘foot lickers’

He was not happy with Gambhir getting credit for India's new aggressive approach.

The Indian team, under new coach Gautam Gambhir has witnessed a dawn of a new era where the Men in Blue are playing a brand of fearless and audacious cricket, as has been witnessed in the Sri Lanka white-ball series and the recently concluded two-match Bangladesh Test series.

India put up a highly aggressive batting display during the second Kanpur Test, where they secured victory in just over four sessions despite losing time due to the poor outfield conditions on Days 2 and 3. In the aftermath of this dominant performance, it earned the style of play several terms similar to “Bazball” (England’s renowned batting style under coach Brendon McCullum) such as “Ro-ball” and “Gamball.”

However, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t exactly impressed with these comparisons.

The Indian cricket legend pointed out that Gambhir never played in such a style during his career, making it inappropriate to use the term “Gamball.”

Sunil Gavaskar coins new term for India’s new aggressive approach

After the win, parts of the Indian cricket community praised Gautam Gambhir for the team’s aggressive strategy. But former India opener Sunil Gavaskar, writing in his Sportstar column, strongly disagreed and argued that Rohit deserves recognition for India’s bold new approach in international cricket.

He introduced a new term and expressed that the credit for India’s batting revolution should go solely to captain Rohit Sharma, not Gautam Gambhir.

Sunil Gavaskar, impressed by Rohit’s safe and calculated batting in the Kanpur Test, suggested that India’s fresh batting approach could be termed “Gohit.”

Echoing in the same lines, Gavaskar said, “Gambhir has only been coaching for a couple of months, so attributing this approach to him is foot-licking of the highest quality. Gambhir himself hardly ever batted in this fashion like McCullum used to do. If any credit is due, it is solely to Rohit and nobody else.”
