Former South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander could well have gotten on board as Pakistan’s new full-time bowling coach if not for the miscommunication on PCB’s part.
The Pakistan board failed to provide Philander with adequate information and job description, which he had sought before the ex pacer was told that Shaun Tait has been appointed instead.
Philander alleged PCB of displaying a shocking lack of professionalism. The pacer said they offered him the bowling coach’s role for the national men’s team but never provided him the details of what is expected out of him.

Vernon Philander played 64 Tests, 30 ODIs and 7 T20Is for South Africa.
In an interview with PakPassion.net, Vernon Philander revealed he had been offered the bowling coach’s role for the Pakistan team but an inappropriate approach from the PCB led to a shocking turn of events, as he lost the race for contention to Tait without proper communication.
“Yes, I was offered the role by the PCB but from a planning and execution point of view, I feel they let themselves down a bit. I received a phone call on 7th February, to inform me that they wished to appoint me as the Fast-Bowling Coach,” Philander said in the interview.
“Whilst I was flattered by this offer, I told them that I needed to know the exact job description of this role, what was expected of me and when they expected me to be there and how I could fit in with the schedule for the Pakistan team,” he added.
“Unfortunately, they could not give me those answers at that time so I told them that it would be extremely difficult for me to take on a job where even my potential employers did not know what they wanted from me.”
Without keeping Vernon Philander in loop of their process and providing him with the job details that he had sought, the PCB looked past him and soon officially declared Tait as Pakistan men’s full-time bowling coach. Philander said it was “extremely difficult” for him to take up a job where he doesn’t know what his employers are expecting from him.
“Unfortunately, they (PCB) could not give me those answers at that time so I told them that it would be extremely difficult for me to take on a job where even my potential employers did not know what they wanted from me,” he said.
“A couple of hours later, I got a call from them informing me that Shaun Tait had been appointed for that role. To be honest, I did have some prior obligations to consider as well but I would have been very tempted to take on the job if only the requirements and specifications were made clear to me,” Philander added.
Proteas’ ace seam bowler was involved with Pakistan on an interim basis during the T20 World Cup in UAE last year. During his stint, Philander worked closely with the likes of Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali, Haris Rauf among others.
It was a stint that helped him understand those men and form good relationships. So much so that he said, despite the recent mishappenings with PCB, he would love to take the bowling coach’s role in future with Pakistan.
