An off-spin bowling all-rounder, seen as the replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin in Test cricket, has played a magnificent knock in the latest game of the Ranji Trophy. While he mostly bats in the lower middle order, his promotion turned out to be the right move as he showed his batting prowess.
Washington Sundar scored a fantastic 152 in 269 balls, with the help of 19 boundaries and a maximum, for Tamil Nadu while batting at No.3. Following his innings, Sundar said he considers himself as a top-order batter.
“I definitely consider myself a top-order batter. I’m very happy with the kind of opportunity I got, to bat at No. 3. For me, one thing is very important – I need to be able to do whatever the team demands. It is a team game. That is what I always think about. Hopefully, I can deliver such knocks consistently.”
It’s worth noting that Sundar started his First Class career as an opener but was later slotted lower in the order, and the focus remained on his bowling. However, as soon as he got an opportunity to bat in the top order again, Sundar ensured to remind everyone of his batting prowess.
Washington Sundar immediately got the reward for his terrific show in the Ranji Trophy by getting a place in the New Zealand series for the second and third Test. He scored 152 runs and has taken two wickets so far.
He can play as a bowling all-rounder if India feel a need for a change in personnel in the remaining games. His inclusion shows India have an eye towards the future, looking to find a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin.

Ashwin is ageing and won’t be around forever, so India need to find alternatives, and a home series might be the ideal way to find them. Sundar’s last Test match came during the series against England in 2021.
It might be an ideal time to include him, given he has done well in domestic tournament. It will be interesting to see whether Sundar gets a spot in the XI.
